  • 3 March 1875Mackinac Island National Park was created as the second national park in the United States. In 1895, it was given back to Michigan to become the state's first park.
  • 16 March 1847 — Ten years after statehood, Michigan needed to decide upon a permanent capital site. Many wanted to move the capital out of Detroit, remembering the British invasion and occupation of the city in the War of 1812. Eventually, a site in Lansing Township, Ingham County was selected.
  • 20 March 1948 — In the first NCAA hockey championship game, the University of Michigan—having beaten Boston College 5-4, in overtime—faced Dartmouth. After falling behind 4-2, Michigan rallied to defeat Dartmouth, 8-4, finishing the year 20-2-1.
  • 22 March 1954 — Following the spread and growth of the suburban population, the J. L. Hudson Company built the Northland Center, the nation's first shopping mall, at Eight Mile Road and Greenfield Road, along the boundary between Wayne and Oakland counties. Inside, a four-storied J. L. Hudson's was flanked by one hundred shops and acres of parking lots.
