The city of Toledo, Ohio is the fourth largest city in Ohio and the county seat of Lucas County. Named after Toledo, Spain, it is located on the western end of Lake Erie, at the mouth of the Maumee River. It is the principal city in the Toledo Metropolitan Area and had population of 313,619 in the 2000 census. According to the US Census, the metropolitan area had a population of 650,955.

The land the city occupies—including the original settlement from 1820 named Vistula—was originally a part of the Michigan Territory. As a consequence of the Toledo War, much of then-claimed Lucas County, Ohio was part of transferred to Ohio and the Upper Peninsula was granted to Michigan as compensation.
